I found that interesting because of something we have on our own property. In my research of the history of log construction, I learned that the oldest remaining log buildings still standing in the country were almost always converted to hay and grain storage, animal shelter or chicken coops as the owners advanced to more modern-built homes. The basics of log construction have changed but the feel remains the same as it was when this cabin was hand-hewn from virgin timber in the mid-1800s. By the very nature of the construction materials, few examples of early log cabins prior to the 19th century remain today. Ukrainian transplants, as well as Germans, who came to America, used similar techniques. It’s widely accepted that the earliest log structures built in the United States were erected by immigrants who migrated from Finland and settled down along the Delaware River in the early 1600s. More advanced double-notch joints as, copied in the children’s Lincoln Log toy design, were quickly found to make a building stronger with less reliance on filling the open space between with mud, or “chinking”. Those who originated log construction quickly moved from round log walls with gaping roofs to ventilate smoke from cooking and heating fires to hewn logs which allowed for a tighter fitment. By the time their descendants rode ships across the ocean to the “New Country” the Europeans had nearly perfected building all sorts of homes and outbuildings from logs. Log-cabin construction is widely attributed to northern Europe. It’s documented that an architect of the time noted buildings formed by stacking logs horizontally and filling any gaps with mud and debris. While the log cabin seems to be an American icon-think Abraham Lincoln growing up in rural Illinois-in reality, building by stacking logs together to form walls reaches as far back as the Roman Empire. An Illustrated History of Log Cabins Log-home construction was probably first popularized in northern Europe, witness this square-log cottage standing today in the Belarusian city of Gomel which dates back to 1142. That’s when I learned the importance of words such as “ambiance,” “warmth,” and “feel”-all things you find in a log home. Later on, I would study log-home construction and eventually deal in real estate for a few years. I suspect, as a little kid, the draw was that someone had built a real building by stacking sticks together. Perhaps it’s all those early years playing with my Lincoln Log set as a small boy, I’m not sure but I feel it every time I even see a log cabin. There’s just something intriguing about log cabins… old ones for sure, but even new ones can carry a built-in comfort not found in a brick and mortar home. Every time I pass that cabin-and I estimate it’s been thousands of times in 46 years-I wonder about the life that once filled its rustic confines. Just down the road from our house sits a sagging cabin made from hand-hewn logs with a low ceiling and raggedly sturdy stone fireplace standing guard on one end.

Warranty: Almost every drive we’ve tested has had either a two- or three-year warranty.Dragging and dropping files works just fine for performing manual backups, and your OS’s built-in backup utility should suffice for running automatic ones. If you don’t need the extra features in backup software, setting it up on every computer you use isn’t worth the time and effort. Backup software is another nice perk, but you can find lots of free alternatives and great options among online backup services. Nice-to-have features: Desktop drives generally have power switches so that you can be sure they’re off when you’re moving them, and these switches can also help the drives waste a little less energy when they aren’t in use in contrast, portable drives generally lack power switches.Desktop drives may be less resistant to drops and are designed to be stationary,” a product expert from Western Digital told us. “Since portable drives are meant to be taken with you, they are designed to be more durable in terms of the everyday wear and tear of taking them along with you. If you’re deciding between an external desktop hard drive and a portable hard drive, ask yourself how often you’ll be moving it around and how careful you are. Get an SSD if you want a drive that has extra protection against getting knocked around, and if you need speed. Durability: Hard drives contain physical moving parts, so they’re more prone to failure due to jostling or drops than solid state drives, which have no mechanical parts. The best way to protect your files from being lost in a hard drive failure is to double up with a cloud backup service. We’ve also analyzed Backblaze’s hard drive failure reports, which have their own shortcomings. It’s difficult to get metrics on which hard drive models are more reliable over the long run, and though we’ve examined Amazon reviews to establish which drives have died more quickly for owners, there will always be outliers and failures that occur sooner than expected. If possible, try to replace your backup drives between the third and sixth years of use. Reliability: All hard drives die eventually, but there’s no definitive answer on when that day will come. Many desktop hard drives are available in capacities of 14 TB or more, but most people don’t need that much storage. Capacity: We focus on 4 TB and 5 TB hard drives because of the balance they strike between value and total cost.Price: Although we consider drives of all prices, we limit our testing to models priced below $150, and we compare their value on a dollar-per-terabyte basis.Performance: We evaluate each drive with tests that replicate different real-world uses. We dismiss drives built exclusively for Thunderbolt 3 and Thunderbolt 4 because they cost too much and don’t perform noticeably better for most people. Input: We consider drives with a variety of USB port types-USB Type-B, Micro-B, or Type-C-but regardless of the port, we look at only those drives that support the most current USB standard, USB 3.2 Gen 2. There’s also the question of Fez and Ashtray-whether Fez died, whether Ashtray died, and how the raid on their apartment connects to the other goings on, i.e., the drug trade. And just Nate’s relationship with everyone. Rue’s narration suggests that things ended for the best, but we aren’t sure what happens to their friendship. Some unresolved plot points will be Rue and Jules’ relationship following what appears to be a breakup in the final moments of season 2. If Rue’s narration covers the remainder of that school year, we might see season 3 picking up the next year-or possible that summer-with Rue, Lexi, and Jules going into junior year, and Nate, Maddy, Cassie, and Kat all going into senior year. Maddy, Cassie, and Kat all appear to be juniors at the end of season 2. Most likely, the third season will follow the first two and consist of eight episodes.Īt the end of season 2, Rue tells the audience through voice over that she stayed clean for the remainder of the school year-that year being her sophomore year. Now, with a definite Season 3 in the works, Holland's spirited campaign can continue (and we support it). According to Buzzfeed News, the star even hung around on set while the show filmed Season 2 and snuck into a photo with the cast. News circulated earlier this year the Spider-Man star really, really, really wanted to cameo in the show. One possible addition (if only for his vocal support) is Tom Holland. No word yet on if newcomers Dominic Fike or Chloe Cherry will make a reprisal of their roles. It’s safe to say Zendaya, Hunter Schafer, and their main co-stars including Alexa Demie, Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, and Angus Cloud will return. Who will be in the Euphoria Season 3 cast ? No word yet on if there are more special episodes to come. With a renewal confirmed, the show could return in a year, in late winter/early spring 2023, as long as there are no other delays. Last year, Covid-19 halted production on the show, pushing back the release date slightly (although we still managed to get two special episodes in between). So, when can we expect more from the larger-than-life teenagers and their dramatic, heartbreaking lives? Scroll down to find out. Mirroring her statement from the Season 2 renewal, Francesca Orti, executive vice president of HBO programming, said the A24-produced show went to “extraordinary heights, challenging narrative convention and form, while maintaining its heart,” Varietyreports. Seriously, the soundtrack is nothing but bangers. Plus, another season means even more incredible music from the show’s music supervisor Jen Malone, and the musician Labrinth, who both helps curate and creates original music for the show. That means Rue, Jules, and the rest of their friends (and enemies) will return again, hopefully sooner rather than later. A renewal had to be a no-brainer for HBO. According to Variety, the show not only retained its viewership from the first season-it doubled it. Clearly showrunner Sam Levinson and his crew are going with the 'bigger is better' philosophy.īefore the show’s second season has even finished, we've already got news: HBO has renewed the show for Season 3. Then Season 2 came and blew the first one out of the water, starting with its violent premiere, continuing with new characters, and a terrifying overdose from Rue. After the first season of Euphoria, we didn’t think HBO’s hit teen show could get any more intense. The top telecasts, outside of sports, that day were “90 Day Fiance” with 2.17 million viewers, “Sister Wives” with 1.8 million, “Real Housewives” with 780,000 (which had a higher demographic but the Hallmark movie beat in terms of overall live viewers), “Fox & Friends Sunday” (which clocked in with 1.6 million live viewers), “Sunday Morning Futures” (which got 1.8 million live viewers), and more. However, “North to Home” faced a lot of competition on Sunday night. On Sunday night, Hallmark Movies & Mysteries’ new movie “North to Home” had slightly more than 1 million live viewers, according to ShowBuzzDaily, and placed 55th out of all the original telecasts on that night, reaching only. Hallmark’s ‘North to Home’ Had More than 1 Million Live Viewers The large viewership that “The Wedding Veil” gained so early in January is setting a high bar for the rest of the movies this year. In 2021, “Christmas at Castle Hart” had the most views of the year, followed by “My Christmas Family Tree,” and “A Royal Queens Christmas.” The only non-Christmas movie of 2021 to make it in Hallmark’s Top 10 (in terms of live viewers) was “Taking a Shot at Love” with 2.99 million viewers. The movie placed tenth out of all the original telecasts in terms of ranking, only being beaten by sports shows. “The Wedding Veil” also beat out the rest of the original non-sports telecasts in terms of live viewers on Saturday night. “The Christmas Contest” had the best demo numbers of 2021 at. The demo numbers still didn’t match Hallmark’s top movies. This also means that “The Wedding Veil” did better than any non-Christmas movie that Hallmark aired in all of 2021. “The Wedding Veil” beat “Christmas at Castle Heart” with 3.394 million to the Christmas movie’s 3.31 million live viewers. Ho! Ho! Holiday Viewing! January 11, 2022 Hallmark's THE WEDDING VEIL got more live viewers (3.394 million) for the network than any movie in 2021, and it's only January 11. Now that we've gotten the basics down, we can dive into some advanced tips and strategies to optimize your Pomodoro task sessions. By alternating between these high-intensity focused work sessions and short breaks, you can maintain long periods of productive work while still allowing your brain the time to rest and recharge. As athletes use a sequence of high-intensity exercises followed by short breaks to amplify physical performance, the Pomodoro Technique applies the same principle to your cognitive abilities. Think of the Pomodoro as being interval training for your brain. This urgency counteracts our innate urge to put things off, allowing you to make great strides in a short amount of time. Soon enough, it'll ring, and the Pomodoro will be over. It'll continue to do so with each distraction or lapse of attention. Just think – you start that timer, and it keeps clicking, second after second. And the rigidity of the Pomodoro sessions is something Cirillo really emphasized, as he said, "If a Pomodoro begins, it has to ring." He was onto something here, as research suggests that feelings of urgency are very compelling motivators for our behavior. You'll be amazed at how much you can accomplish when racing against the clock. The power of the Pomodoro comes from the sense of urgency produced by its strict time limits. This seems counterproductive to getting more things done, no? Taking all those breaks adds up to quite a bit of time. The key is finding what works best for you – jump ahead to learn more about finding your perfect Pomodoro rhythm. After four Pomodoros (or one set), take a 15-30 minute break to restore your energy.ĭo 25-minute focus sessions feel a bit short? You may prefer 50-minute Pomodoros followed by 10-minute breaks. Repeat, take 15-30 minute breaks every 4 Pomodoros: Once your break is up, reset your timer to begin again.Take a 5 minute break: Use this time to relax, stretch, or grab a snack – momentarily detach yourself from the task to recharge your energy.Work on your task for 25 minutes: Commit your focus to this single task, avoiding multitasking to stay in the zone.Set a timer: Set a task timer for 25 minutes, and disconnect yourself from notification distractions and interruptions.Choose a task: Pick a task to focus on (work project, strategic planning, studying, any activity requiring your full attention). So how does it work? The method behind the Pomodoro is actually pretty simple: Then Pomodoros may be your answer to getting dedicated focus time into your day. Struggle to maintain focus for extended periods.Need to complete tasks that require a lot of focus and mental energy.Need to maximize productivity in short periods. Each 30-minute chunk of time is called a "Pomodoro." After completing a few of these Pomodoros, you take a longer break, typically around 15-30 minutes.īut is the Pomodoro Technique right for you? The answer depends on your work style, goals, and preferences. So, what exactly is it? The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method that breaks down work into 25-minute intervals followed by 5-minute breaks. Developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s as a university student struggling to focus (using a tomato kitchen timer that probably looked like this), this time management method has since gained widespread popularity and is used by millions of people (including us). It's the Pomodoro Technique (the Italian word for tomato) that can help you stay focused and better manage your time. What do tomatoes and procrastination have in common? Seemingly nothing, what kind of question is that? But hold your horses, this red vegetable (or fruit) could actually help you be more productive. This hack is released in 2018 by our hacker team. Obviously, from now on, I will print out the boarding pass before my flight at home and at the hotel before I leave but that does not help me now since this is a new rule that was created within the last month of 2019.Searched history. There needs to be a way to retrieve a previous boarding pass. If they do not, they will get many phone calls from people upset that did not know about this new rule and cannot get reimbursed for government travel. While there are other airlines who do allow this process, Southwest needs to get on board with this capability. They are usually represented on thermal sensitive papers, and every passenger should have them at the airport before flight departure. The government forces us to take Southwest because they won the contract for certain legs of business trips. Boarding Pass & Bag Tag Printer Certain flight documents (e.g., boarding passes, baggage tags, etc.) are necessary for passengers who travel by air. Southwest and other airlines need to create a process that is easier for business travelers on government orders. This is a new rule and it is across the federal government from what I understand. Why is it that I can have my boarding pass on my Southwest App but then I cannot retrieve it for at least a month afterwards? I stupidly thought my work would understand that submitting my first boarding pass would be proof that I went and obviously there had to be some miraculous way for me to return, maybe they assume I sold my return ticket and took the hyperloop or beamed myself back to work after my trip? Since, usually you have to take the same airline ticket back when it is round-trip with a few exceptions, but that just makes too much sense for the federal government, I guess. And to top it all off, Southwest Customer Service is not open on the weekends! I find this out after waiting on the customer service line for a half-hour to be told they are not open on the weekends. My work is also requiring both boarding passes for a round-trip flight in order to reimburse for the work trip. The town of Guyandotte was officially absorbed in 1891. The C&O purchased the area in 1870, and by 1873 when the railroad connected Richmond to Ohio, it had undergone a transition from a sleepy agricultural region with the nearby subscription Academy into a growing rail center poised to act as a springboard for a railroad to penetrate and connect the midwest with the eastern seaboard. A farmer James Holderby (1782–1855) purchased the lands in 1821 upon which much of Huntington now stands which is why the area was known as Holderby's Landing prior to 1870-71 when it was incorporated and renamed Holderby's estate included the lands gifted in 1837 to found what is now Marshall University. Historically, the old Federal Era town of Guyandotte (now a neighborhood absorbed into Huntington proper) was first built upon in 1799 by French settlers of the Ohio Valley and has homes dating back to 1820 and a graveyard containing 18th-century French and colonial-era settlers, including surnames such as LeTulle, Holderby, and Buffington. The area of greater Huntington, although situated in a Southern state, was long considered a western city in what was then the Colony of Virginia since the first permanent settlements were founded in 1775 in defiance of British injunctions against settlements west of the Alleghenies in the vicinity of Holderby's Landing. Discounting the period of French ownership, the land that was part of Guyandotte and later Huntington was originally part of the 28,628-acre (115.85 km 2) French and Indian War veteran's Savage Grant. The site is at the southwestern corner of West Virginia on the border with the state of Ohio and near the border of both states with Kentucky. Huntington was founded on lightly populated lands near Guyandotte as a C&O Railroad hub, on the southern bank of the Ohio River, at the confluence with the Guyandotte River. The first identifiable permanent settlement, Holderby's Landing, was founded in 1775 in the Colony of Virginia. The site, previously a collection of agricultural homesteads, developed fast after the railroad's completion in 1871 and is eponymously named for the railroad company's founder, Collis Potter Huntington. The railroad founded Huntington as one of the nation's first planned communities to facilitate the railroad and other transportation-related industries at the railway's western terminus. Its location was selected as ideal for the western terminus of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, the predecessor of what would become CSX Transportation which still operates CSX Transportation-Huntington Division in the city to date. Also, it is considered a scenic locale in the western foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The city is a vital rail-to-river transfer point for the marine transportation industry. Surrounded by extensive natural resources, the industrial sector is based in coal, oil, chemicals and steel, all of which support Huntington's diversified economy. It is home to the Port of Huntington Tri-State, the second-busiest inland port in the United States. Both the city and metropolitan area declined in population from the 2010 census, a trend that has been ongoing for six decades. After World War II, due to the shutdown of these industries, the city lost nearly 46% of its population, from a peak of 86,353 in 1950 to 54,844 in 1990. During the 1900s, the city was a major hub for manufacturing, transportation, and Industrialization. Its metro area, the Huntington–Ashland metropolitan area, is the largest in West Virginia, spanning seven counties across three states and having a population of 359,862 at the 2020 census. Huntington is the second-largest city in West Virginia, with a population of 46,842 as of the 2020 census. The county seat of Cabell County, the city is located at the confluence of the Ohio and Guyandotte rivers. Huntington is a city in Cabell and Wayne counties in the U.S. |
